The Land

Butternut Ridge Farm is 280 acres in size. Of this, roughly half is forest and pasture, with the other half consisting of crop land. I grow 15 acres of alfalfa and about 125 acres of either corn or soybeans each year. The land is rolling, with the forest occupying the hilly areas and ravines.

The Northeast field

The northeast field full of young corn in Spring 2003. "Knee-high by the Fourth of July," as they often say in Iowa.

The South field

The south field ready to plant with soybeans in Spring 2004.

The West pasture

The west pasture, which sits to the west of the hog farrowing and hog finishing buildings.

The West field

The west field in February, 2003. It was a surprisingly long, cold walk back to the farmhouse.
