The Farrowing House

The 32’ x 40’ farrowing house on Butternut Ridge Farm was built in 1970 on the same spot where the original barn stood. In the past, this building was an integral part of the farrow-to-finish hog farming operation on my farm. Besides nursing sows and their piglets, the farrowing house has seen many different kinds of livestock during its 36 year life. In addition to hogs, it has housed chickens, sheep, and Nubian and LaMancha dairy goats.

The hog farrowing house

Although it looks like something from the 1940’s, the farrowing house was built in 1970.

The hog farrowing house

Not too many small farmers farrow today due to the cost, and certainly not in a small building like this.

The dairy goats don’t seem to mind that this building is considered obsolete.
