The Brooder House
The brooder house on Butternut Ridge Farm is 16 x 16, and was purchased as a kit in the 1940s from the local lumber yard. It originally had green shingles that were later replaced by rolled asphalt roofing. By 2004, the roof was starting to leak pretty badly, so I installed the new steel roof. In 2005, I replaced the old rotten windows with new ones. Lastly, in the summer of 2008, I repainted the brooder house. It was a time-consuming job in the sweltering heat of the Iowa summer, but well worth it.
This building has seen many broods of chicks over the years. Among them were Rhode Island Reds, White Rocks, Silver Laced Cochins, and my favorites, the Barred Rocks. Chickens are fascinating birds and if you don't have any on your farm or acreage, you dont know what youre missing.
